This song is about a guy with big dreams who is incapable (incompetente,
incapaz) of acting on them, so they never come true. As was custom with
Supertramp, it was credited to their founding members Rick Davies and Roger
Hodgson, who wrote separately but shared composer credits. "Dreamer"
was written by Hodgson, who also sang lead. When Songfacts asked Roger in 2012
if he was a dreamer, he replied: "I am, and I definitely was even more
back then. I was a teenager, I had many dreams. And I feel very blessed
(afortunado, dichoso) that a lot of them came true. But that song flew out of
me one day. We had just bought our first Wurlitzer piano, and it was the first
time I'd been alone with a Wurlitzer piano back down in my mother's house. I

Desmond Tutu recibe el Premio
Nobel de la Paz (1984)
El
15 de octubre de 1984 el clérigo y pacifista de Sudáfrica Desmond Tutu era
galardonado con el Premio Nobel de la Paz por su lucha constante contra el
Apartheid que durante décadas rigió este país. Dos años más tarde lo ordenaban
Arzobispo Anglicano de Ciudad del Cabo, convirtiéndose así en el primer
sudafricano negro que ocupaba este cargo. Desde esta posición, Tutu continuó su
labor incansable contra la política de segregación racial hasta su
erradicación. Y cuando en 1994 se celebraron las elecciones democráticas que
convirtieron a Nelson Mandela en el nuevo presidente electo, fue nombrado
director de la Comisión para la Reconciliación y la Verdad, el organismo que
denunció las atrocidades cometidas por ambas partes y que se ha convertido en
todo un ejemplo en todo el mundo.
Aunque
estaba presente y activa desde hacía décadas, la visibilidad mundial de la
lucha contra el Apartheid no llegó hasta la década de los ochenta. A las
potencias occidentales, que durante la Guerra Fría habían hecho la vista gorda
a cambio de que el régimen sudafricano combatiera los aliados africanos de la
Unión Soviética, cada vez se les hacía más difícil mantener su apoyo a un
gobierno que no mostraba ninguna intención de cambiar su política abiertamente
racista. En aquellos años, entidades internacionales y personalidades del mundo
artístico se fijaron en la situación de este país y articularon diferentes
acciones y campañas para denunciarla. Y en este contexto, la música jugó un
papel esencial. Varios artistas participaron en conciertos para reclamar el fin
de la segregación racial; y otros, incluso, compusieron canciones para
combatirla. Es el caso de Eddy Grant, un músico nacido en la Guyana y criado en
Londres, y que en 1988 lanzó su personal protesta contra la situación sudafricana
con Gimme Hope Jo’anna.
Publicada
en el periodo más represivo sangrienta del Apartheid, esta canción festiva de
estribillo pegadizo presentaba una letra que era todo un canto a la libertad de
las minorías oprimidas del país. Sus versos estaban llenos de referencias a las
injusticias que se producían diariamente contra la población de color. A partir
de una letra construida a partir de la personificación de Johannesburgo en
Jo’anna, Grant articuló todo un discurso para reclamar el fin de aquel sistema
que segregaba la población por su color de piel, sometiendo a la minoría negra.
Con Gimme Hope Jo’anna (Dame esperanza Jo’anna) Grant cantaba
a la ciudad más poblada del país y desde donde pedía que se extendiera la
abolición de la política del Apartheid. A lo largo de sus estrofas, el tema
describe diversas situaciones y consecuencias de la aplicación de este sistema,
pero también hace mención a diferentes elementos que eran todo símbolo de los
dos mundos que contraponía. Se refiere al barrio negro de Soweto; a Mandela,
que en aquella época aún se encontraba encarcelado; a Sun City, el complejo
hotelero que en 1985 inspiró el proyecto colaborativo de diferente músicos
para concienciar a la opinión internacional del problema sudafricano; y también a Desmond Tutu,
como uno de los grandes luchadores contra el sistema.
Inmediatamente
después del lanzamiento de Gimme Hope Jo’anna el gobierno sudafricano la
prohibió, pero no pudo impedir que el tema se difundiera por otros canales y
que en mercados como el británico se convirtiera en un Top Ten durante más de 5
años seguidos. Su música alegre hizo que muchos de los que la bailaron los
ochenta no captaran el componente reivindicativo de su letra, aunque su
videoclip era muy explícito. Pero con el tiempo ha acabado considerándose uno
de los himnos pacifistas más coreados de Europa y África.
«Gimme Hope Jo'anna» ( Español: Jo'anna
Dame Esperanzas) es una canción original creada por Eddy
Grant, que además la interpreta. Es una canción dentro del
movimiento reggaeanti-apartheid,
convirtiéndose prácticamente en su himno, ya que fue escrita durante el apartheid en Sudáfrica. La
canción fue prohibida por el gobierno sudafricano que no pudo impedir que fuera
ampliamente escuchada por todo el país. Alcanzó la posición 7 en los UK
Singles Chart, convirtiendo a Grant en un Top 10 durante más de 5 años.
"Jo'anna" en la letra representa no solo a la ciudad
de Johannesburgo, sino también al nuevo
gobierno de Sudáfrica que acabó con el sistema apartheid. Soweto es
un barrio negro cercano a Johannesburgo, conocido por su papel en la
resistencia contra el apartheid conocida por "escurrirse a través de las
fronteras enemigas" para luchar en otros países, sobre todo en la Guerra Civil Angoleña. El arzobispo es Desmond
